Suburban Chicago Nurse Sentenced For Exporting Weapons

CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago nurse has been sentenced to five years in prison for purchasing and shipping more than 30 weapons to the Philippines.

A Thursday statement from the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago says a federal judge sentenced Edwin N. Makasiar II earlier this week.

The 44-year-old registered nurse from Lombard pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempting to export defense articles without a license.

The prosecutors’ statement didn’t say what motivated Makasiar to send weapons to the Philippines. But a government sentencing memorandum said his “conduct implicates the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States and threatens the safety of the Philippines.”

He admitted in a plea agreement that he exported more than 30 firearms from 2005 to 2012, including handguns and rifles.
