Lawsuit to Halt Wenona Hog Farm Construction Tossed

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A lawsuit seeking to block construction of a Wenona hog farm has been dismissed by a central Illinois judge.

Opponents of the 20,000-head hog farm in Marshall Country had challenged developer VMC Management Corp. of Williamsburg, Iowa, and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, which granted preliminary approval of the project in October.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that Sangamon County Circuit Judge John P. Schmidt ruled Thursday that the citizens’ group Save Our Sandy has no legal standing to halt the project.

The group’s name is a reference to a creek near the site. Group members said they have not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling.

Local residents who oppose the project argue the hog farm will create increased traffic and noxious odors while driving down property values.
