Illinois Man’s Fundraising Walk For Memorial Coming to Close

PRINCEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois community is planning a warm welcome home for an 84-year-old man who set out to walk across the state to help raise money for a memorial park dedicated to his wife.

The (Peoria) Journal Star  reports Princeville native Dean Troutman is scheduled to return from his roughly 700-mile trek on Sunday afternoon when a party has been planned for him. He began the walk in April.

Troutman is building a park on land he bought in 2011 as a memorial for his wife Peggy. He’s said constructing the baseball and soccer fields, picnic pavilions and other facilities has cost more than anticipated.

Troutman has said he walks no more than 12 miles a day. He’s carried sleeping supplies, an extra pair of walking shoes and clothes.
