Alternatives to Offer Two Additional Support Groups

Alternatives for the Older Adult has begun offering two new support groups that are free to the public.

The first group is for grandparents or other relatives who are raising children.

The group will meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the morning from 10 to 11:30 at the Galesburg Alternatives Office on Main Street.

Alternatives Caregeiver Counselor Susan Johnson tells WGIL that the group was added as a way to help grandparents or other relatives receive support and resources.

“The Illinois Department of Aging estimates that there are over 100,000 grandparents and other relatives raising grandchildren in Illinois,” says Johnson. “This is an effort to reach them with support, and to give them knowledge of services that are out there to help them. That’s in the morning on first Wednesday’s.”

The second support group is for caregivers caring for a family members or friends, where they share and receive information and resources on caregiving.

The caregiver support group will meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Alternatives office.

Johnson says she has held the caregiver group in other counties before and it was time to start one in Galesburg.
