City Council to Vote on Utility Tax Tonight

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015Galesburg City Council members are expected to vote on a city-wide utility tax agreement tonight.

Aldermen requested that City Manager Todd Thompson draft a proposal at last week’s work session.

Under the terms of the proposal, gas will be taxed at a rate of 5.15 percent, which will include an allowance of three percent for Ameren administration fees.

Electric will be taxed on a tiered scale. Thompson has said he expects a percentage of between four and six percent.

If approved, Galesburg could expect to receive around $2.3 Million in revenue–money which would be used for dire infrastructure needs. The funds would be used for multiple projects, which Thompson says would be approved on a project by project basis.

Council members have voiced a near total support of the tax. Last week, Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen said, in his 14 years on the council he would support a tax such as this one, because of the infrastructure issues.

Thompson estimates the city current has $2.45 Million in deferred maintenance. He has also stated that for every dollar not spent now, the amount would look like four or five in the future. The tax would go into effect January 1st.
