Former Illinois US Rep. Mel Reynolds to be Arraigned

CHICAGO (AP) — A former U.S. congressman from Illinois is scheduled to step before a federal judge in Chicago and enter a plea on federal tax charges.

Monday’s hearing will be Mel Reynolds’ first court appearance since a grand jury indicted him last month for failing to file income tax returns for four straight years starting in 2009.

This isn’t the first legal quandary for 63-year-old Chicago Democrat.

The Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar resigned his 2nd Congressional District seat in 1995 after being convicted of statutory rape for having sex with an underage campaign worker.

If convicted on the four tax counts, Reynolds faces a maximum one-year prison term on each count.

As of Sunday, his court docket didn’t name a defense attorney. Reynolds also hasn’t spoken publicly about the allegations.
