Joliet Transportation Center Costs May Climb

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The cost of improving rail and bus service in Joliet may be climbing.

The (Joliet) Herald-News reports two bids to build a new train station and commuter platforms have come in high. The lower bid is $15.6 million, about $2.1 million more than anticipated.

A new train station is part of the Gateway Transportation Center project, which includes a bus station and converting the old Union Station for commercial uses. The entire project could cost $46 million, with the city’s share at $9.5 million.

City Manager Jim Hock says officials will meet with the Illinois Department of Transportation to discuss ways to stay within budget.

Hock notes there is another complication. A state grant for roof repairs at Union Station was canceled recently because of the budget standoff in Springfield.
