Adjudication Zoning Hearings Coming to Knox County

knox county sealYesterday at the Knox County Nursing Home and Zoning Committee, committee members discussed the progress on adding administrative adjudication hearings to Knox County.

This would allow anyone with a zoning violation to appear before hearing officers to determine if a fine would be administered, rather than simply waiting for a judge.

Knox County Zoning Administrator Chris Gray tells WGIL that previously it could take a year or two before violators could see a judge.

“It’s always been that the paperwork goes to the State’s Attorney’s Office, and it could take us a year–some instances even two years before we get before a judge in the courts,” says Gray. “Needless to say, there is a lot more important things that go before the judges other than zoning cases and violations. Through administrative adjudication, we have hearing officers now that are going to sit and hear the violations. They won’t necessarily be judges, but they will be able to determine if fines will be imposed.”

Gray says they expect to start as early as August, and they will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on the last Friday of every month.
