Sandburg College Holds Open House to Showcase Upward Bound Student Projects

CSCUpwardBound2015Today, Carl Sandburg College held an open house to display the work of students who participated in this year’s Upward Bound Summer Program. The program lasts for six weeks and prepares students who are college-bound for the upcoming academic year.

Director Tony Bentley tells WGIL that the students work through four subjects to stay sharp and prepare for college.

“Upward Bound is a federal program, we work with High School kids and try to get them ready for college,” says Bentley. ” So, during the summer we have an academic component. They come out and they work in the four subject areas: Math, Science, Foreign Language and English. It’s just about keeping them active during the summer and keeping them involved in things.”

Bentley says this year there were about 20 participants in the program that includes five weeks of classes, including visits to nearby colleges and universities and then a trip at the end.

Upward Bound Student Colton LaGrow says they put together several projects as a group, including programming robots, creating reports on historical people or place in Illinois and cooking German food.

According to Bentley, in addition to the summer program, students could participate in internships around the area and recent graduates could participate in the summer bridge program and take college credit classes through Carl Sandburg College.
