Galesburg Woman Could Face 15 Years for Welfare Fraud

henry countyA Galesburg woman accused of welfare fraud in Kewanee could face significant jail time if convicted of her alleged crime.

38-year-old Gloria C. Evans appeared in Henry County Circuit Court for a preliminary hearing this past Monday.

Evans has been charged with one count of state benefit fraud, a class 3 felony. She has also been charged with a count of recipient fraud over $10,000. The charge is a class 1 felony, which could result in up to 15 years in prison.

According to the Kewanee State Courier, Investigator Rose Young of the Illinois Department of Health and Human Services says the department received an anonymous tip that the father of Evan’s children was employed and living with Evan’s.

The Galesburg woman had reportedly submitted applications, stating she did not live with the father. Young said an investigation stemming back to 2010 showed Evans received monthly payments for food stamps totaling around $13,800.

Probable cause was found in the case. Evans has been released on $2,000 bond.
