Local State Representatives Support Paying State Employees During Budget Impasse

Don MoffittRepresentative Don Moffitt and Representative Norine Hammond have announced they are both co-sponsoring House Bill 4245 which would allow state employees to continue to be paid. According to a press release from the Illinois General Assembly, Hammond says it is wrong for state employees to be expected to continue to work and not know when they will next see a paycheck.Norine Hammond

Representative Don Moffitt tells WGIL that he is strongly in favor of the bill and that this bill shouldn’t be controversial because it isn’t tied to other issues.

“I’m strongly in favor of House Bill 4245. I’d like to see a vote on it. I think the Governor would sign this bill,” says Moffitt. “It doesn’t complicate it with any of the unrealted issues that are part of the discussion, part of the debate, part of the controversy. This isn’t controversial and that’s why as a good, clean, single-issue bill, that’s what we should be voting on. Let’s not tie the issue of whether or not state employees are paid to other issues.”

Within the past few days, two different Circuit Judges in the state had different rulings on the matter. A St. Clair County Circuit Judge ordered the Illinois Comptroller to pay state employees and a Cook County Circuit Judge ruled only some workers can be paid.
