Injured Carbondale Veteran to be Children’s Camp Counselor

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois veteran who lost his right foot in Afghanistan has been chosen to be a counselor at a summer camp for children who have had amputations.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that Rahul Harpalani’s right foot was amputated after an explosion. He received a Purple Heart and is fitted with a prosthetic limb from the knee down. The Carbondale veteran will be one of 25 counselors at the six-day 2015 Amputee Coalition Paddy Rossbach Young Camp this month in Ohio.

Harpalani went through rehab at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington for 15 months. He said he sees being a counselor as an opportunity for him to give back. He says he thinks he’ll learn “just as much, if not more from the kids.”
