Strong thunderstorms moved through Warren and Knox counties tonight producing not only heavy rain and lightning, but also tornadoes. Trained spotters confirmed tornado touchdowns in both counties, as well as 10 miles southwest of Galesburg, but the greatest damage was done in Cameron in Warren County.

A tornado touched down near Cameron at 7:30 p.m tonight, causing significant damage to many homes and buildings.

Illinois State Police Public Information Officer Dan Hill told WGIL at the scene, that no significant injuries or fatalities have been reported at this point.

“This evening at approximately 7:30 p.m., the town of Cameron was struck by a tornado,” says Hill. “There was significant damage done to the town–a relatively small town. With the significant damage though, there are no reported significant injuries.”

All roads leading into Cameron remain closed at this time. Hill says fire and rescue crews from all over the area were dispatched to assist and will continue sifting through rubble. Gas has been shutdown, and Ameren is continuing to shutdown electricity.

United High School is being used as a shelter for those displaced from their homes. At this time, officials are asking that no more volunteers enter the area to avoid congestion.

With the heavy rains came flash flooding throughout both counties last night as well. Many communities reported flooded streets. WGIL will have more information as it comes in. Authorities will hold a press briefing at 8 a.m tomorrow to asses the situation.
