Suburban Chicago Woman Convicted of Stealing From Mother

CHICAGO (AP) — A jury has found a 54-year-old suburban Chicago woman guilty of stealing up to $20,000 from her infirm mother.

A Wednesday statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office says Monica T. Ogen was convicted of financial exploitation of an elderly or disabled person. The jury returned with a verdict Tuesday.

Prosecutors say the Batavia woman took the money in 2009 and 2010 while her mother was in a care center. They say Ogen spent much of the money on clothing, or at restaurants and at bars. Ogen wrote a letter of apology to her mother after she was charged.

Ogen faces up to seven years behind bars and could be ordered to pay restitution to her mother’s trust. Her mother died in 2012.

Ogen’s next court appearance is Sept. 9.
