Governor Rauner Visits Cameron, Assesses Tornado Damage

Cameron Rauner 3Strong thunderstorms moved through Warren and Knox counties last night producing not only heavy rain and lightning, but also tornadoes. Trained spotters confirmed tornado touchdowns in both counties, as well as 10 miles southwest of Galesburg, but the greatest damage was done in Cameron in Warren County.

A tornado touched down near Cameron at 7:30 p.m, causing significant damage to many of the 50 or so homes and buildings, however no significant injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Governor Bruce Rauner came to Cameron for a briefing and said the state will help in any way that they can.

“We’re here today to assess the damage. We’re going to bring state resources in every way we can to help the community clean up and recover,” says Rauner. “As I’ve been meeting with the families, their resilience and their positive attitude towards dealing with this devestation, it’s remarkable. The families here are remarkable. The way members of the community are coming together to help each other, it’s wonderful.”
Fire and rescue crews from all over the area were dispatched to assist and will continue sifting through rubble. According to Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins, Cameron was nearly evacuated by 3 a.m.

The Monmouth Armory is being used as a shelter for those displaced from their homes. Ameren officials have reported that gas is expected to be restored at this time and electric to be restored by 10 p.m. At this time, officials are asking that no more volunteers enter the area to avoid congestion.

With the heavy rains came flash flooding throughout both counties last night as well. Simkins reports no significant damage to Galesburg. WGIL will have continued coverage as more details come in.
