Moffitt Hear’s Galesburg Plea to Fight for Services, Workers During Budget Impasse

Don MoffittOn Wednesday night, a Rally was held in Galesburg to urge resident to reach out to State Representatives about the vital services at risk of cuts from the state budget.Last night, State Representative Don Moffitt said those cries were heard, as he has received phone calls and even some in-person visits.

Moffitt says in terms of state employee pay, there was no question about the July 15th payment, as that actually covered the June 15 to June 30th time, but the July 30 payroll is at risk.

Recently two counties in Illinois had different rulings over whether payments could be made, Cook County saying no and St. Clair County saying yes. Moffitt tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL that the issue will probably have to go to the Illinois Supreme Court, and hopes it will be before the next pay date.

“This will probably go to the supreme court, Illinois Supreme Court, to rule because we have two different Judicial Rulings,” says Moffitt. “[This] Complicates it. The AG has asked, i think, for an expedited ruling, and hopefully that will be settled before the July 30th payroll. I feel very sad that the employees are caught in this discussion and debate on the budget.”

On Wednesday the Illinois Senate passed a temporary budget that would protect services and thousands of state workers, which waits for Governor Bruce Rauner’s approval.
