Treatment Plant ‘Brings Chicago Into Civilized World’

CHICAGO (AP) — A new treatment facility on Chicago’s Far South Side is pumping cleaner water into the city’s waterways.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said the disinfection facility at the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant “brings Chicago into the civilized world when it comes to the treatment of sewage and the discharge.”

Chicago was the last major city in the United States to get such a facility, which disinfects treated wastewater.

The facility was the result of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency audit that found the water quality in Chicago’s rivers was below federal standards.

Officials say the cleaner water will improve safety for kayakers and other recreational waterways users.
