Bustos Visits Cameron, Meets with Families and Workers

BustosCameron2Congresswoman Cheri Bustos made a trip to the recovering town of Cameron this morning, where she met with those cleaning up and helping out. Bustos consoled families as they picked up their yards from tornado damage. She ate lunch with volunteers at the Cameron Christian BustosCameron3Church, where American Red Cross workers served food, and where stockpiles of clothing were being collected for those in need. The East Moline Democrat says she’ll take away the stories families had to tell.

Bustos tells WGIL, that she heard the good and the bad.

“There’s a lot of emotion in this town. Moms and Dads crying and not knowing what their next steps are, hearing about insurance companies that are not covering everything that they’re facing ahead,” says Bustos. “Also, the stories of hope. You have these communities that have these unbelievable first responders, who had the decency to buy a bicycle for a little boy who was crying because his bike was lost, and rescuing a dog who had been buried for two days inside of a house. I think it’s all of that. The bad, the good, the face that we have people in these small towns, who come to help.”

BustosCameron1Bustos recently backed a FEMA reform bill that would essentially help small towns receive greater assistance when affected by natural disasters. The legislation would put greater weight on damage assessment for a specific area, rather than heavily relying on state population figures.
