Prayer Walk for Sandra Bland Draws Hundreds to her Church

LISLE, Ill. (AP) – A prayer walk for a Chicago-area woman found dead in a Texas jail cell last week has drawn hundreds of worshippers.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports participants walked silently Sunday around the grounds of DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle, Illinois, where Sandra Bland had attended.

Many wore white ribbons with a photo of Bland and signed petitions urging an independent investigation of Bland’s death.

Authorities say the 28-year-old black woman from Naperville, Illinois, hanged herself. Her family questions that account.

Churchgoer Deitra Tribble tells the Daily Herald the official account of the death is “not the Sandy that we know.”

Bland’s death at the jail comes amid increased national scrutiny of police after a series of high-profile cases in which blacks have been killed by officers.
