Galesburg City Council Discusses Implementing Business Licenses

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015Potential business licenses for all existing and incoming businesses in Galesburg was the topic of discussion last night at the Galesburg City Council meeting.

Aldermen took no action, but discussed the possibility of having businesses apply for a license so that city officials could use information as a regulatory tool.

Under the license, all businesses would be required to submit to a background check and provide contact information.

Various aldermen questioned the ambiguity of who all would need to apply. City Manager Todd Thompson told council that it essentially means anyone bringing in revenue.

“There is a definition of who the license applies to that is very lengthy and somewhat complicated,” says Thompson. “I could see where somebody who is mowing grass might be a little bit confused, but in reality, if you are conducting business and bringing in revenues, you should license yourself as a business.”

If passed, the license requirement would go into effect on the first of the year. As of now, no cost would be associated, however, Thompson added that council could consider associating a fee a year after implementation.

Meanwhile, council voted 6-0 to pass a measure that ensures funds from the city-wide utility tax be used for infrastructure needs in the city. Alderman Jeremy Karlin was absent.
