Knoxville City Council Considers Options for Knox County Fair Sign

7-28-14 Knoxville City CouncilAt last night’s Knoxville City Council Meeting, members of the Knox County Fair Board were present to hear options for the sign they want to install.

City Council members determined that the Knox County Fair would not be eligible for TIF funds because the sign would be considered new construction.

Council members determined that another option would be to have the Fair board lease the space from Knoxville to obtain the funds.

2nd Ward Alderman Dennis Maurer told the fair board that the city could contribute to the sign if the board leased the land from the city.

“It’s my understanding that if the city were to lease a small plot of land where the sign would stand, then the city would be within its rights to erect that sign using its funds,” says Maurer. “You  could contribute to that effort as well.”

1st Ward Alderman Jim McGovern suggested that if the fair board were to sell the land at any time, they could just break the lease.

The fair board said they would consider this and discuss it, and also considered the possibility of annexing into Knoxville.
