Alastair Willis Leaving Illinois Symphony Orchestra

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Symphony Orchestra music director Alastair Willis has asked to be released from his contract a year early.

The symphony, which serves central Illinois, said in a news release that Willis made the request to balance the demands of his international performance schedule. Willis was appointed to the position under a five-year contract in June 2012. The upcoming 2015-2016 season will be his last.

Willis has performed recently with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic and famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. ISO Board President Carolyn Yockey says the orchestra has started establishing a search committee with the goal of having candidates conduct during the orchestra’s 2016-2017 season.
