Attorney Says He Believes Chicago Police Officers Killed Man

CHICAGO (AP) — The attorney for the family of a 24-year-old man who died in Chicago police custody says he believes a homicide took place.

Police were responding Monday to a burglary call when Heriberto Godinez was arrested. Police say when arrested, the man was having trouble breathing.

Police say “despite medical intervention,” died at the scene.

Attorney Jeffrey Granich said Wednesday witnesses reported seeing a police officer place his knee on Godinez’s neck while he was face down on the ground. Granich says a person in the medical examiner’s told him Godinez’s neck may have been broken.

Autopsy results are so far inconclusive. However, Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Cina says the office will conduct tests to “identify disease or injury to the brain, neck or spinal cord.”

The Associated Press has asked the Independent Police Review Authority for video of Monday’s incident.
