Wheeling Officials to Weigh $25M Rec Center Expansion

WHEELING, Ill. (AP) — Officials in a northern Illinois community are trying to decide whether the village can afford a $25 million expansion of the Community Recreation Center.

Members of the village and park boards in Wheeling are discussing how they should move forward with the proposal. Options for the project include scaling it back, completing it in phases over several years or asking taxpayers for funding through a referendum.

The park board president tells the Daily Herald that the 20-year-old rec center has outgrown the current space.

Officials plan to incorporate the village’s senior center into the expanded rec center. The proposal calls for a senior wing with a banquet hall, library, crafts room and other amenities.

The proposed expansion also includes a kids’ corner, indoor turf field and fitness area.
