Capital Improvement Projects to be Outlined by City Council Tonight

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015Galesburg City Council members will meet in a work session tonight to begin designating capital improvements expected to be made around the city.

Various city streets, sewers, and sidewalks in dire need of repair have been discussed, and aldermen will begin to decide what will be maintained first.

A report filed by City Manager Todd Thompson, indicates the city maintains more than 176 miles of roadway, 152 miles of sidewalk, and 56 miles of storm sewer. Thompson estimates the city currently faces more than $2.45 Million in deferred maintenance.

The expected improvements stem from the recent passing of a city-wide utility tax, which is expected to bring in roughly $2.35 Million annually for such fixes.

The use of funds have been sectioned off into three sections. Approximately $600,000 for capital improvements will be taken from an $8 Million bond issue. The remaining amount will go toward both storm water utility and planning funds.

Meanwhile, council members will also discuss the city budget in tonight’s session. Conversation begins at 5:30 in the Erickson Conference Room at City Hall.
