Coast Guard Urges Safety After Boat Hits Chicago breakwall

CHICAGO (AP) – The U.S. Coast Guard is urging boaters to be mindful of safety after a recreational vessel hit a Chicago breakwall over the weekend. A Coast Guard statement says the 22-foot vessel collided with the wall late Saturday night as three people aboard returned from a fireworks show at Navy Pier.

None of the three, two men and a woman, had operable cellphones and the boat didn’t have a marine radio. No one was injured.

Coast Guard rescuers arrived at the scene Sunday morning after someone passing by called 911. The stranded boaters were waiting on the breakwall.

The Coast Guard cited the owner for not having registration, a fire extinguisher or emergency flares.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to be sure they have safety gear aboard, including flares.
