Opening Statements Made in Alleged Officer Killer’s Trial

CHICAGO (AP) – A prosecutor says a man being tried for allegedly killing a Chicago police officer in 2010 hated police and surprised the officer as he changed out of his uniform and placed his duty belt down.
But Caroline Glennon, a defense attorney for Bryant Brewer, said in her opening statement Monday in her client’s bench trial that he feared for his life and believed Officer Thor Soderberg would kill him.

The 43-year-old Soderberg was shot with his own gun in 2010 outside a South Side police building while he prepared for a volleyball game.

Assistant State’s Attorney Brian Sexton said Brewer grabbed Soderberg’s gun from the belt, shot him in the back and stood over the fallen officer while he shot him in the right eye and top of the head.
