Galesburg City Council Works on Draft for Capital Improvement Program

6-23-14 Galesburg City CouncilAt last night’s Galesburg City Council work session, council members discussed the first draft of the Capital Improvement Program.

City Manager Todd Thompson gave a presentation of the financial side of the program, while City Engineer Wayne Carl introduced the projects, specifically the streets that need repair or reconstruction.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin expressed concern that while the streets and sewer lines need work, he would like to see something in the first year that will attract families to Galesburg.

“The reality of this, is that this funding source is going to be our only funding source for capital projects in the foreseeable future, unless we do something different about growing the population of Galesburg ” says Karlin. “We want streets that work, and storm sewers that move water. It certainly is a part of a growing community, and a part of that growing community is having amenities that can add families to it.

Some of the other council members agreed that other projects should be considered, such as bridges or additional landscaping.

The council also discussed possibly holding a work session with the Galesburg Sanitary District to discuss surveying the sewer lines.
