Gutierrez Says He Will Pay Congressional Staff Overtime

WASHINGTON (AP) — Illinois Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez says he will comply with a proposal made by President Barack Obama and pay overtime to members of his staff.

Last month, Obama asked the Department of Labor to consider extending overtime pay to most salaried workers earning less than $50,440 a year. Currently, that requirement applies to workers making $23,660 a year.

Gutierrez said he won’t wait for rules covering private business to be finalized before starting to pay overtime. He notes members of Congress should live with rules required of the private sector. House members have discretion on how they spend money given to hire employees and run their offices.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports about half of the 18 staffers on Gutierrez’s payroll could be impacted by a new overtime pay plan.
