Peoria Moves to Ban Medical Marijuana for County Workers

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — One central Illinois county is a step closer to keeping its ban on employee use of marijuana, including for medicinal purposes.

Illinois’ pilot medical marijuana program is getting started this year.

But a Peoria County Board committee recommended Monday that the county keep its ban in place. The full board will vote next month.

County Administrator Scott Sorrel tells the (Peoria) Journal Star that the move keeps the county in line with federal law barring possession of marijuana.

Though that conflicts with the new state medical marijuana law, Sorrel says the county must follow federal law. Some of the federal grants the county receives mandate a drug-free workplace.
