UI President Defers Salary Program Pending State Budget

URBANA, Ill. (AP) _ The president of the University of Illinois says the school is deferring paycheck increases until the state budget is settled in Springfield.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that UI usually announces its merit-based salary program in July for the coming academic year. But President Timothy Killeen told workers the program on hold this year until the state budget impasse is solved. Those raises usually take effect in August.

Killeen says the move is necessary so the school knows “exactly what has been promised as our appropriation.”

GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders in the state Legislature haven’t agreed on a budget for the fiscal year that started July 1.

School officials said Tuesday that the UI however will honor raises that come from promotions or previously approved contracts.
