August Trial Set for fugitive Scott Air Force Base Airman

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AP) — A Scott Air Force Base airman who disappeared while awaiting a court martial and was later arrested in Nevada will go to trial Aug. 24.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Tech Sgt. David Helm will face charges including desertion, sexual assault causing harm and counts of child rape and sexual abuse. Helm has been at the southern Illinois air base’s pretrial confinement facility after he was arrested June 8.

Helm was assigned to the 375th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. He disappeared before his initial hearing and was declared a fugitive.

Helm told the Nevada state trooper who arrested him that he had gone skydiving, driven a high-performance race car and was headed to California. He was pulled over for having a broken tail light on his motorcycle.
