Joliet’s Penny Parking Meters Arrive in Sycamore

SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) – The northern Illinois city of Sycamore now has the parts it needs to fix its penny parking meters.
The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports that city officials went to Joliet on Thursday to pick up 75 boxes containing about 600 coin-operated parking meters. Sycamore city leaders previously said they didn’t have parts to fix their prized parking meters. The city of Joliet stepped and sold its unused meters to Sycamore for $300 in scrap value after it switched to digital meters.

Sycamore parking enforcement officer Giovanni Serra says “it feels pretty good to have some working parts.”

The city about 60 miles west of Chicago is one of the few places in the country where penny parking meters are used.

Sycamore has about 300 meters. A penny buys 12 minutes.
