Mel Reynolds Due in Court 2nd-Straight Day on Housing Issue

CHICAGO (AP) – An ex-congressman from Illinois with no home of his own is to appear in Chicago federal court to seek approval for accommodations that would meet bond conditions.
Friday’s hearing for Mel Reynolds comes a day after he scrambled to find somewhere to stay. The housing issue arose Thursday when prosecutors said restrictions on sexual offenders should apply to the Democrat. He was convicted of statutory rape in 1995.

The 63-year-old Harvard graduate pleaded not guilty to income tax charges Thursday.

A judge already rejected several residencies, including one close to a school. A lawyer has said Reynolds found a place to spend Thursday night and believes he has suitable long-term accommodations.

Reynolds wasn’t required to register as a sex offender. But prosecutors say sex-registry restrictions should now apply.
