Police: Man Cleared of Murder Killed by Man he Tried to Rob

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago police say a man who was exonerated of a murder charge after spending 17 years in prison was killed by a man he attempted to rob.
Authorities say 40-year-old Alprentiss Nash was fatally shot Tuesday while attempting to rob 30-year-old Paul Vukadinovic of Mount Prospect. Police said Thursday the two men have “a long drug history.”

Both men were armed during a confrontation and exchanged gunfire. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the shooting is “being explored as a possible self-defense case.”

Nash was convicted in the 1995 murder of Leon Stroud, based on witness testimony. In 1997, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison.

He was released in August 2012 after DNA tests on a ski mask recovered from the scene matched the genetic profile of another man.
