SIU Authorizes Teachers to Work Despite State Budget Woes

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) – Southern Illinois University has told hundreds of instructors that they’ll have jobs this fall despite state budget troubles in Springfield.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinois reports that in April, SIU sent notices to most of the school’s 1,800 faculty and graduate assistants telling them they might not have a job. But SIU administrators this week authorized contracts for the teachers despite the state budget gridlock.

SIU spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith says the school waited for a state budget, but “we couldn’t wait any longer.” She says jobs for SIU’s graduate assistants are guaranteed through the fall semester. Faculty will be cleared to work the full school year.

GOP Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders in the state Legislature have been at a budget impasse for the fiscal year that started July 1.
