Medal of Honor Recipient Honored in Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Several people turned out to a ceremony to see the stamp that bears the likeness of a Peoria man and 47 other living recipients of the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War.

The Peoria Journal Star reports that Hal Fritz was honored outside the post office in downtown Peoria. He said that he hopes the stamp will remind people to support veterans and learn more about military service.

Fritz received the nation’s highest award for valor after he helped defend his ambushed convoy against enemy assaults during a battle in Vietnam on Jan. 11, 1969.

The stamp was unveiled at a ceremony in May by the U.S. Postal Service but Fritz could not attend.
