City Council to Vote on Business License Tonight

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015Galesburg City Council members will likely make a decision tonight, as to whether or not businesses will be required to receive a new license in order to operate.

Aldermen previously discussed the matter two weeks ago, and questions were raised in regard to who would be required to hold the license and how it would be enforced.

According to City Manager Todd Thompson, anyone “conducting business and bringing in revenue” would be required to license themselves as such.

If passed, all existing businesses would be subject to a background check.

City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz mentioned at the last general meeting, that many times the city does not know about new business coming to town because not all are required to be on record with administration.

As of now, no cost would be associated with the license, however, Thompson says that could be re-evaluated in the future.

Meanwhile, three proposals to help regulate video gaming will be on tonight’s agenda. The measures would limit available gaming liquor licenses to five.

Council meets at 6:30 tonight in City Hall.
