Seminary Street Widening, Bickerdyke Bridge Runoff Among City Projects in the Works

Galesburg-city-signGalesburg City workers have been taking care of various projects around the area this summer.

Currently, water crews are finalizing service lines to the water main on North Seminary Street, where the ultimate goal is a widening of the road.

That’s according to City Engineer Wayne Carl who tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL, that no additional lanes will be added, however the road will be widened for cyclists.

“It was a little bit narrow by today’s design standards,” says Carl. “Typically, when we want to accommodate bicyclists, we’ll go ahead and widen the lane a little bit so we have 14-foot wide lanes. It’s not wide enough to have striped bicycle lanes like Fremont street, but they will be wider so that they can accommodate cyclists. You’ll have a 14-foot lane instead of an 11 or 12 foot lane.

The project is expected to be done by the end of the year. Meanwhile, work is being done to fix a construction error on the north end of the Bickerdyke Bridge. Carl says the contractor originally made storm sewers too small, an issue which has cause severe flooding at times as a result of runoff from the bridge. The sewer will be widened by about 15 inches.
