Galesburg Police Raising Hope For Special Olympics Athletes

specialolympicsLocal authorities have developed a tradition of helping Special Olympics athletes in Illinois, a tradition that doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.
Galesburg Police are going on 20-plus years of raising money for the organization, funds which are raised through various events every year.  That’s according to Patrol Officer Dan Williams who is in charge of an upcoming event this weekend.

GPD will host a pancake breakfast this Saturday from 8:10 a.m until 10 a.m. at Applebees. All of the funds raised will be donated to support athletes around the state.

This is the first year for the breakfast. Williams says it was developed in order to “try something new to help raise money.” He tells WGIL, that so far this year, donations coming in have been good.

“As of right now, I’m sitting right around $5,000 for this year,” says Williams. “We’ve only had two events, so we’re doing pretty good for that. Last year, I want to say we did three or four events and did close to $8,000.”

This weekend’s event is one of many that helps out. GPD participates in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Galesburg Polar Plunge at Lake Storey. Williams says they have held a number of other fundraiser’s at area establishments as well. He adds that the department is in the process of planning an event specifically catered to local athletes. That event will take place sometime next year.
