Knoxville City Council Considers Allocation of Surplus Hotel/Motel Funds

7-28-14 Knoxville City CouncilAt last night’s Knoxville City Council Meeting, Hotel Motel Funds were considered for various funding projects.

One of which, includes the Knox County Fair Sign that has been discussed for several weeks.

Alderman Dennis Maurer discussed using $10,000 from the excess funds of just over $70,000 to go towards the sign, instead of using TIF funding.

Maurer tells WGIL that under TIF funding funds could not be used for the electronics, but using Hotel Motel funds would not restrict them.

“When it comes to electronic signs, I don’t believe TIF money can be used for the actual electronics that runs the display,” says Maurer. “We had a similar situation with the Mobil sign, where basically the sign itself, but the electronics that drives the display were not qualified under the TIF act.”

No final vote was taken, but an agreement will be drafted for discussion at the next meeting.

The council also tabled scenic drive funds, Vendor permits for promotional use, a no parking ordinance on the residential side of Orange street, and funding historical sites in Knoxville with Hotel Motel funds for the next meeting.
