Mr. Richard William Leafgreen, 92, of Rio, Illinois died at 8:12 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 in Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Illinois.
He was born August 22, 1922 in Rio, the son of William F. and Estella H. Swanson Leafgreen. He married Meryle D. Brown on August 28, 1943 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on April 30, 1981. He then married Maryan Peterson Arthur on December 30, 1991 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2003. He later married Mary Weech Icenogle on August 11, 2008 in Rock Island, Illinois. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Richard (and Sandi) Leafgreen of Austin, Texas and Terry (and Linda) Leafgreen of Rio; his two brothers, George Leafgreen of Galesburg and Harvey (and Barbara) Leafgreen of Rio; four sisters, Helen Peterson of Knoxville, Illinois, Pauline Sheridan of Monmouth, Illinois, Elizabeth (and Don) Robinson of Woodhull, Illinois, and Marion Link of Galesburg; seven grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first two wives, and a brother.
Richard was a farmer his entire life, retiring in 2004. He graduated from Alpha High School in 1940. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a 50 year member of the Knox County Farm Bureau and was a 4-H Leader. He was a volunteer for the Rio Fire Department. He was a member of the Galesburg Elks Lodge. He enjoyed raising livestock.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. James Ecklund will officiate. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 6, 2015 at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rio Cemetery Association. A celebration of his life will continue at the Galesburg Elks Lodge following the committal service.
