Cafe in the Park Rounds Off 20th Year this Summer

Cafe in the Park 2015Every Wednesday, hundreds of people flock to downtown Galesburg for the weekly Cafe in the Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.Coordinator Bill Morris says they average about 300 people weekly, but have peaked with 700 visitors.

Every week, a restaurant offers food and entertainment is booked for area residents to enjoy.

Morris tells WGIL that the event started 20 years ago when the Downtown Council wanted to create an event and the park space was not being used.

“Years ago, when the Downtown Council was looking for some way to bring people into downtown, we had this park sitting here and it wasn’t getting used very much,” says Morris. “They decided to bring the event here 20 years ago and it hasn’t stopped ever since. It was just like a monthly event, and then it became a weekly event.”

Morris says they spent a couple months before the first event scheduling the restaurants, sponsors and entertainment.

Today’s restaurant was The Kensington, and Kensington Administrator Karen Vannaken says it’s a great way for restaurants to get their name out.

Cafe in the park is held at the park between Main street and Simmons street, and will run every Wednesday up until Labor Day.
