Galesburg High School Works on Restoring Drama, Band Equipment After Summer Flooding

9-4-14 Galesburg High SchoolA variety of events led to the failing of two sump pumps at Galesburg High School during a June storm, which led to thousands of dollars of damage.

District 205 Finance Director Jennifer Bloyd-Hamm says one of them failed because power was off for electrical upgrades at the school.

The other one failed because the float in the sump pump was stuck and couldn’t be turned back on.
Bloyd-Hamm tells WGIL that they are still configuring damage costs, but anticipates roughly $70,000 of damage.

“We’re still adding up the bills at this point,” says Bloyd-Hamm. “The insurance adjusters were at the high school yesterday, to take a look at everything. Based on what I currently have, we’re probably looking in the neighborhood of somewhere around $70,000 that we will be submitting for an insurance claim, but there are a few things out still that we are waiting on quotes for, so, I think that is probably a safe number.”

Among some of the damaged items include theater, choir and band equipment that were stored in the basement that flooded.

Bloyd-Hamm says some of the items were able to be dried out and can be reused, but some had to be replaced completely.
