Tomlin, Donald E.

Tomlin, DonDonald E. Tomlin, 90, of Monmouth, passed away at 6:20 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Rosewood Care Center of Galesburg. 

He was born on December 14, 1924 in Monmouth, the son of Walter and Mabel (Jameson) Tomlin.  Don was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School 1942.  He also attended Albion College in Albion, Michigan.

Don served in the United States Army during World War II and was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.

He married Celia A. Phelps on November 29, 1942 in Kahoka, MO, she preceded him in death on May 20, 2009, and they were married for 67 years.

Don co-owned and operated Nifty Boats & Motors in Monmouth with his brother, Larry, for several years.  He then worked for many years as an insurance agent for Country Companies.  He was a member of the Monmouth Rotary Club for 43 years, Faith United Presbyterian Church, and American Legion Post 136, Monmouth.  He enjoyed flying, and was a private pilot. Don and his wife loved to travel and spend their winters in Texas.

Surviving Don are his Children; Donald P. Tomlin (Debra) of Galesburg, IL, Susan K. Nelson (Dennis) of Clearwater, FL, Nancy M. Tomlin of Indianapolis, IN, Jaci L. Tomlin of Townsend, GA, David K. Tomlin (Paula) of Indianapolis, and James C. Tomlin (Julie) of Brookfield, WI.  Also surviving are five grandchildren; Andrea, Christa, Colby, Tyler, Michael, eight great grandchildren; Erin, Christopher, David, Lucas, Kaylee, Erica, Katie, Sean, two great great grandchildren; Tatum and Tripp, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one grandson Nick Tomlin, one great grandson Marcus Nestor,  three brothers; Larry Tomlin, Robert Tomlin, Walter Tomlin, Jr., and one sister Lucielle Tomlin.

Memorials Services with Military Honors will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Faith United Presbyterian Church, Monmouth. Interment will be in Biggsville Cemetery.  His family will be present to receive friends from 10:00 a.m. till the time of the service at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded.  Memorials can be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church.  McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, is in charge of the arrangements.
