Orpheum Theater Finishes Off Throwback Thursdays, Prepares for Red Carpet Series

Orpheum TheatreAs Throwback Thursday comes to an end at The Orpheum Theater, the red carpet is getting ready to be rolled out for the Red Carpet Series.

Executive Director Kevin Maynard says there are still two movies left in the Throwback Thursday series, today is Singin’ in the Rain, and next week will be Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Maynard tells WGIL that Throwback Thursday was implemented when a few years ago the theater ended up with no shows on the schedule.

“It started really out of necessity,” says Maynard. “We had a renovation that was set to take place and then became cancelled, so we were a theater that had no shows booked, and had nothing going on in it for about two months. One of my employees came to me and asked if this idea of doing free summer movies, every Thursday–something that is at least 20 years old. We went with it, and it has grown significantly since then.”

As soon as that finishes on the 13th, the Red Carpet Series begins on August 22nd with Mike Super doing Magic and Illusion.

Various events are scheduled through March for the series, including The Wonder Bread Years, and a live radio play of Miracle on 34th Street.
