Bacon Fest To Ham Up Monmouth Tonight

baconMonmouth will be full of sights and smells tonight, as Bacon Fest takes over the downtown area.

Event Coordinator Paul Schytema says 600 pounds of bacon were already brought in earlier this week for the fest.

More than 19 vendors will be lined up near Rotary Park, many of which will serve bacon inspired dishes in a “tapas” style tasting.

Schytema tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL, that the idea first started when Cloverleaf Cold Storage first opened its facility last year.

“Smithfield was putting together a little spread of snacks for people to have while they were waiting, and they just brought out big containers of cooked bacon–thousands of slices of bacon,” says Schytema. “We all kind of looked and thought–we should have a bacon festival! Smithfield and Cloverleaf thought we should totally do that.”

Schytema adds that music by various performers will be on hand at this years inaugural fest. Various food and beverage creations will be available. A few items that visitors can sample include bacon stuffed pork chops, candied bacon, and bacon brownsugar ice cream. Tonight’s fest will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
