Galesburg Public Library Acquires Two New Properties and a Board Member

1-8-15 Library BoardThe Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees walked out of their meeting yesterday with two new properties and a new board member.

Alisha Hodge has taken a seat on the board and says she looks forward to being involved in such an “essential service” to the community.

Hodge says she is also looking forward to being involved in the development of the new library.

The Board went into an executive session to discuss purchasing property and came out of the session to vote to approve the purchase of two properties.

The first property is at 47 South Academy purchased for $40,000 and the second is at 51 South Academy for just over $23,000 plus fees.

Library Director Harriet Zipfel told the board that she had looked into getting grants for deconstruction at the properties, but was unsuccessful.

Zipfel told the board that she looked into Illinois Central College’s Deconstruction program as possibly an option to reduce costs.

“I found that ICC has a relatively new construction program,” says Zipfel. “They may need some buildings to reconstruct. I’ve contacted the head of that department, it’s just early days yet.”

The board also discussed letting the Landmark Commission walk through the buildings to see if there was anything they would like preserved.
