Historic Jubilee College Opens to Public August 8th for 175th Anniversary

JubileeTours and Special Programs will be offered at Jubilee College State Historic Site in Brimfield. The opening comes as a celebration of 175 years since the college first started offering classes.

According to a press release sent out by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the college is normally closed due to state budget limitations.

Volunteers will be helping to show visitors the L-shaped main building with the school’s chapel, classrooms and boy’s dorms, as well as the prairies surrounding the school. A presentation will be available for visitors to walk through the cemetary and learn about preserving Illinois prairies and attracting butterflies to their garden.

The college served as a prep school for boys, and a seminary for both boys and girls when it was open in the 19th century. Jubilee College opened in 1839 when it was founded by Illinois’ first Episcopal Bishop, Philander Chase, and classes began the following year before it closed it’s doors in 1862.

The August 8th events will be themed “A Salute to Jubilee College – The Jewel in Your Backyard”.

Jubilee College is northwest of Peoria near the intersection of Route 150 and Jubilee-Princeville Road.
