Illinois Starts Practices Under Pressure On and Off Field

illiniCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – Illinois will start preseason practices Thursday with big questions on the field and off.
Illini coach Tim Beckman is waiting for a law firm hired by the university to finish its investigation of alleged mistreatment of players. School officials say they don’t know when that report will be finished.

But Beckman also has to worry about keeping often-injured quarterback Wes Lunt healthy.

And Illinois has added a co-defensive coordinator in Mike Phair to try to improve a shaky defense.

The bottom line is also an issue for Beckman. Illinois was 6-7 last season and hasn’t had a winning season in his three years in Champaign.

Split-squad practices will start in Champaign. The team will move to Rantoul Sunday.
